Tolls and road charges in Belgium

Car on an open road in the Belgian countryside

Tolls are a limited affair in Belgium today: with a car you drive almost everywhere for free. That changes from 2027. Below we set out what you pay now, what applies only to trucks, and what the road vignette adds to the picture.

No general toll on the motorway

On Belgian motorways you pay no toll with a passenger car. There is one exception: the Liefkenshoek tunnel near Antwerp, where every vehicle pays a toll. Apart from that, motorways and regional roads are toll-free for cars today.

Kilometre charge for trucks

Trucks heavier than 3.5 tonnes do pay a kilometre charge on large parts of the road network in Flanders, Brussels and Wallonia. The rate depends on the weight, the euro standard and the region, and from 1 July 2026 a CO2 charge is added. Motorhomes are exempt from this kilometre charge, even if they are heavier than 3.5 tonnes.

The road vignette from 2027

From 1 May 2027 a digital road vignette arrives for every vehicle up to 3,500 kg, so cars and vans, to use Belgian motorways and regional roads. It is not a sticker but a digital vignette linked to your number plate. You choose a short period (a day, ten days, a month or two months) or a full year. You will find the expected prices on our homepage.

In short

For cars, Belgium is almost toll-free today, apart from the Liefkenshoek tunnel. Freight transport pays the kilometre charge. And from 1 May 2027 the road vignette is added for all light vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, for residents and foreign drivers alike.
