Driving in Belgium

Touring Belgium in a motorhome or campervan? The rules mainly depend on the weight of your vehicle, with the 3.5-tonne line as the pivot point. Below you will find what applies for the road vignette, the kilometre charge, the low-emission zones and the permitted speeds.
A motorhome up to 3,500 kg is treated like an ordinary car. That means that from 1 May 2027 you need a road vignette to use Belgian motorways and regional roads, with the same prices and periods as for cars.
Motorhomes are exempt from the kilometre charge that applies to trucks, even when they are heavier than 3.5 tonnes. Exactly how such heavier motorhomes fit into the vignette scheme, which targets vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, is not yet fully clarified. We will update this page as soon as the final rules are known.
Motorhomes are also subject to the low-emission zones in Antwerp, Ghent and Brussels, based on their euro standard. If you drive with a foreign plate, register in advance. You can read more on our page about low-emission zones.
A motorhome up to 3.5 tonnes may drive 120 km/h on the motorway, just like a car. If your motorhome weighs more than 3.5 tonnes, a maximum of 90 km/h applies on the motorway. All limits by road type are on our page about speed limits in Belgium.
