Campers and motorhomes
Does the road vignette apply to campers and motorhomes?
More and more travellers drive through or along Belgium by camper, heading for the coast, the Ardennes or further south. From 2027 something important changes: a digital road vignette. This article tells you exactly whether your camper or motorhome is covered.
The short answer
The vignette applies to every vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes that uses Belgian motorways and regional roads. If your camper weighs no more than 3.5 tonnes, you will need a valid vignette from 1 May 2027, just like a regular car or van. Above that mass, the camper falls outside the vignette.
The 3.5 tonne limit
What counts is the maximum authorised mass (MAM), not the weight at any given moment. You will find this figure on the registration certificate. Many compact campers and camper vans stay below 3.5 tonnes and therefore need a vignette. Large, heavy motorhomes are often above it and fall outside the scheme.
Heavy campers and the kilometre charge
If your camper is above 3.5 tonnes, you might immediately think of the kilometre charge for lorries. In most cases, though, you do not pay it. A camper registered as vehicle category M, meaning for carrying passengers, is exempt from the kilometre charge whatever its weight. Only campers registered as a lorry (category N) may be subject to it. If in doubt, check box J of your registration certificate or run the check at Viapass.
What does the vignette cost?
What the vignette costs depends on your motorhome's Euro emission standard and on how long you need it. The same rates apply to cars, vans and motorhomes up to 3.5 tonnes:
| Euro standard | 1 day | 10 days | 1 month | 2 months | 1 year |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zero emission | €8.10 | €10.80 | €17.10 | €27 | €90 |
| Euronorm 4 and higher | €9 | €12 | €19 | €30 | €100 |
| Euronorm 0 to 3 | €11.25 | €15 | €23.75 | €37.50 | €125 |
You will find more detail on the rates in our article on what the vignette will cost.
What about caravans and trailers?
The vignette is digital and linked to the number plate of the motor vehicle. If you tow a caravan or trailer, the towing vehicle is what counts. Whether a separate rule will apply to caravans themselves has not yet been confirmed.
Foreign campers
The vignette applies to every number plate, including Dutch, German and French ones. If you cross the border by camper, do read whether foreign drivers have to pay and how the road vignette works.
Still provisional and by region
The scheme is confirmed for Flanders. Wallonia and Brussels are working on their own versions. Whether separate rates for campers will apply has not yet been decided. We will keep this article up to date as things become clearer.
